Bifold & Patio Doors

Bifold and Patio Doors for Wirral and Chester Homes

Bring the garden into the room. We supply and install slim aluminium bifolds that fold right back, and patio sliders that give big glass with small frames, each one made to the opening we measure at your home.

Two ways to open up a back wall

Bifold doors are a row of slim aluminium panels hinged to one another. Unlock them and they concertina along a track, stacking neatly at one end or splitting to both ends, until nearly the whole width of the opening is clear. On a warm afternoon the kitchen and the patio become one space.

Patio sliders work differently. Large panes sit in a frame and glide past each other on a track, so one section moves while another stays put. You never get the full width open at once, but the frames are small and the glass is big, and nothing swings or folds into the room. That makes a slider the natural pick where floor space is tight.

Which homes and rooms each one suits

Bifolds come into their own on wide openings that face a garden: a new kitchen extension, a rear wall knocked through to a dining area, or a garden room you want to throw open in summer. If you picture the doors fully open for half the year, bifolds are usually the answer.

Sliders tend to win on narrower openings, and in rooms where the view through the glass matters more than the opening itself. A lounge looking down the garden, a bedroom onto a balcony or a snug where a sofa sits close to the doors all suit a slider, because the moving pane stays within its own frame.

Plenty of the jobs we are asked about are replacements rather than new openings. Tired French doors or an old patio door can often be swapped for a bifold or slider in the same space, and we will tell you at the survey whether the existing opening works or would benefit from changing.

Choosing the right setup

A few decisions shape how the doors look and live day to day. We talk them through on site with a tape measure in hand rather than leaving you to guess from a brochure.

  • Opening width: the overall size of the gap decides how many panels or panes make sense
  • Panel count and traffic door: on a bifold, one panel can open on its own like a normal door for quick trips outside
  • Where the stack sits: folded panels need a clear spot inside or out, away from furniture and bins
  • Sightlines: fewer, larger panes mean less frame across the view
  • Threshold: levelled and sealed so the doors stay weather tight, with the step height agreed at survey
  • Glazing and colour: chosen with you during the survey to suit the house and the room

How the job runs

It starts with a free survey. We measure the opening, check the brickwork and the support above it, look at the floor levels inside and out, and talk about how you want to use the doors. Afterwards you receive a fixed written price, with no hard sell.

Your doors are then made to measure from our own figures. On the day, our own team takes out the old frame, sets the new doors in, levels and seals the threshold, and finishes the edges inside and out. The site is cleared and left tidy at the end of each day, so you are not living in a building site.

Planning and building regulations

Swapping like for like in an existing opening rarely needs planning permission, although listed buildings and conservation areas can have their own rules. Creating a new opening or making an existing one wider is a bigger change, because the wall above needs proper support and building regulations will usually apply.

We can explain the general position when we visit, but the final say rests with your local council or building control, so it is worth checking before work is booked. Our guide to building regulations for windows and doors covers the basics in plain terms.

Why homeowners choose Wirral Windows

We are a family-run firm working within about 30 miles of the Wirral, Chester included. Every frame is measured, made and fitted by our own team, and you deal with the same people from the first visit to the final clean-up. If a slider would serve you better than a bifold, or the reverse, we will say so. Ring 0800 994 9440 or use the form below to arrange your survey.

Questions

Common Questions

Should I choose bifold or sliding patio doors?

Choose bifolds if you want to open almost the whole wall onto the garden. Choose a slider if you want the most glass and the least frame, or if the room is short on space in front of the doors.

Can you widen an existing opening for bifold doors?

Often, yes. Widening means supporting the wall above the new opening, and building regulations will usually apply. We check the structure at the survey and explain what is involved before you commit.

Do bifold doors need a level threshold?

Not always. A level threshold looks clean and makes stepping out easier, but it needs careful sealing against the weather. We agree the threshold height with you at the survey and level and seal it on fitting day.

How many panels will my bifold doors need?

That depends on the width of the opening and how and where you want the panels to stack. We measure and suggest a layout at the survey, including whether to have a single traffic door.

Can you replace old French doors with patio doors?

Yes. French doors can usually be replaced with a slider or a bifold in the same opening, and we also fit new French doors if you would rather keep that look.
