Conservatory roof replacement
Conservatory Roof Replacement on the Wirral and in Chester
Too hot in summer, too cold in winter, loud in the rain. Replacing an old polycarbonate roof with a warm insulated one is often the change that turns a conservatory into a room you actually use.
Why the roof is usually the problem
Most conservatories built in the 1990s and 2000s were finished with polycarbonate sheets. They are light and cheap to put up, but they do very little to hold heat in over winter or keep sun out in summer, and every shower on the roof sounds like a drum. Over time the sheets can discolour, the seals can fail and the glazing bars can let water in.
Because the frames and base underneath are often still sound, you do not always need a new conservatory. Replacing the roof alone keeps the walls, floor and doors you already have, and deals with the part that makes the room uncomfortable.
Roof options we offer
We fit three broad types of replacement roof, and the right one depends on how you want the room to feel and how much daylight you want to keep.
- Solid roofs: insulated panels with a plastered ceiling inside, turning the space into something much closer to a proper extension
- Tiled roofs: a solid insulated roof finished outside with lightweight tiles, so it sits more naturally beside the main house
- Glass roofs: modern high performance glazing for anyone who wants to keep the open sky feel, with far better insulation than old polycarbonate
What we check before quoting
A warm roof weighs more than the polycarbonate it replaces, so the survey is not just about measuring. We look at the condition of the existing frames, the base and the dwarf walls, and whether the structure is suitable to carry the new roof. If something needs strengthening or is not suitable, we tell you plainly before any price is agreed.
We also look at how the new roof meets the house wall, gutters and downpipes, and where any lighting or ceiling finishes would go inside. You then receive a fixed written quote with no follow-up sales calls.
How long it takes
Existing polycarbonate roofs can be replaced in as little as two days, depending on size and the roof type chosen. The old roof is stripped, the new one is built and weathered, and the site is left tidy. Our own installers do the work, never subcontractors, and every installation carries our 10 year insurance-backed guarantee.
Living with the new roof
The difference most people notice first is sound. Rain that used to drown out the television becomes a background patter, and the room stops feeling like a greenhouse on bright afternoons. In winter, a warm roof holds far more of the heat you put into the room, so a conservatory that was shut off from November to March can become part of the house again.
It is worth thinking about how you will light and heat the room once it has a proper ceiling. Many people add spotlights or a pendant into a solid roof, and a solid ceiling gives somewhere to fix them. Blinds that were needed to stop glare under polycarbonate are often no longer needed, and furniture and flooring fade less once the sun is no longer pouring straight through the roof.
Roof only, or a bigger change?
If the frames are failing, the base is moving or the room is simply the wrong size, a new conservatory or orangery may be better value than a roof alone. We will say so if that is what we find. Our conservatory roof replacement guide covers the choices in more detail, and our conservatories page shows the wider range.

Questions
Common Questions
Can you replace just the roof and keep my conservatory frames?
Yes, where the frames, base and walls are sound. We check this at the survey before quoting.
How long does a roof replacement take?
Existing polycarbonate roofs can be replaced in as little as two days, depending on size and roof type.
Will a solid roof make the room too dark?
It will be less bright than clear glazing. If daylight matters most, a glass roof option keeps it while improving insulation a great deal.
Is the work guaranteed?
Yes. Every installation carries our 10 year insurance-backed guarantee.
Where do you fit replacement roofs?
Across the whole Wirral, Chester and within roughly 30 miles.
Do I need building regulations approval for a new conservatory roof?
Often, yes. Swapping polycarbonate or glass for a solid roof changes the weight and insulation of the structure, so it usually falls under building regulations. We explain what applies to your conservatory when we survey it.
Can you add lighting into a new solid roof?
Yes. A solid roof gives a proper ceiling to fix spotlights or a pendant into, and electrics are part of the conservatory work we handle, so lighting can be planned in at the survey.
