French Doors Supplied and Fitted on the Wirral
A pair of French doors gives a defined garden entrance with a classic double-door appearance. We supply and fit uPVC and aluminium French doors, planning the opening direction, glass and threshold around the room and the space outside.
Make the doorway work on ordinary days
French doors have two hinged leaves that meet in the middle. One is used first for everyday access, with the other opened when you want the wider doorway. Think about which side should be the main leaf: the route from the kitchen to a path, or from a sitting room to a patio, can make one arrangement much more convenient than the other.
They suit a room where a defined entrance matters more than opening an entire wall. When closed, the central frame line is part of the view. That can fit a traditional elevation well, but if uninterrupted glass is your priority, it is worth comparing a sliding patio door before deciding.
Opening inwards or outwards
Outward-opening French doors leave more room for furniture indoors, but the leaves need somewhere clear to swing outside. Check steps, planters, a retaining wall and the position of garden furniture. A narrow patio can make an apparently simple outward opening awkward in practice.
Inward opening moves that clearance requirement into the room. Curtains, blinds and a sofa close to the opening can get in the way. At the survey, we consider both sides of the doorway rather than recommending an opening direction from the outside appearance alone. The proposed arrangement should be agreed before the doors are made.
uPVC or aluminium French doors
uPVC gives a practical, lower-upkeep option and can sit comfortably alongside existing uPVC windows. Aluminium offers a slimmer frame appearance that can suit a contemporary extension or a more glazed rear elevation. The material choice affects the visible frame around the glass as well as the overall design.
Compare the finish with any windows that are staying. Matching colour names alone does not guarantee that different materials will look identical, particularly where a foil sits beside a powder-coated finish. We discuss the material and colour as part of the complete opening, not just as two independent choices.
French doors with side panels
Fixed glazed side panels can fill a wider opening without making each moving leaf unnecessarily broad. They bring extra light into the room while keeping the everyday door manageable. A top light can also change the proportions where the opening is taller than the proposed door set.
Those panels need their own glazing specification. Consider privacy from neighbours and the position of low glass, especially beside a door used by children. The survey covers the overall frame, panel layout and glazing, so the finished assembly has balanced proportions and the agreed safety glass where required.
The meeting point and threshold matter
The centre where the two leaves meet needs accurate alignment and sound seals. Multi-point locking and securing the second leaf are part of the complete door specification. A pair should close in the correct sequence and lock without dragging or needing force.
At floor level, easier access and weather protection need to be considered together. Indoor flooring, patio level and drainage affect the threshold choice. Thresholds are levelled and sealed properly for weather tightness, with the surrounding details agreed at the survey rather than left until the installation.
From an existing opening to fitted doors
Wirral Windows offers a free survey with a fixed written price and no-pressure quotations. Every frame is measured, made and fitted by our own team. We assess the existing opening, agree the direction and layout, and leave the site tidy at the end of each day. Use the form below for a French door survey, or compare the bifold and patio service if a sliding or folding opening would suit the room better.
Questions
Common Questions
Are French doors secure?
Security depends on the complete door set: multi-point locking, the second leaf's securing points, suitable glass and a correctly fitted frame. Both leaves should close and lock properly. A classic double-door appearance does not mean accepting a weak locking specification.
Can French doors open outwards?
Yes. Outward opening keeps the leaves clear of indoor furniture, provided there is enough space outside for the swing. We consider paths, steps and the patio arrangement at the survey before agreeing the direction.
French doors or patio doors?
French doors suit a defined double doorway where there is swing space. Sliding patio doors suit tighter layouts or a preference for larger uninterrupted panes. Bifolds suit a wider opening you want to fold back. Compare how you use the room before choosing.
