Tilt and turn windows

Tilt and Turn Windows Supplied and Fitted

One handle, two ways to open. Tilt the top in for secure airflow, or turn the whole sash inward to clean the outside glass from inside the room. Made to measure and fitted by our own team.

How a tilt and turn window works

A tilt and turn sash is controlled by a single handle with three positions. Pointing down, the window is locked. Turned to the side, the sash swings inward on hinges like a door. Turned upward, the bottom stays fixed and the top drops inward a few inches, leaving a gap for air that is very hard to reach from outside.

That inward opening is the whole point. Nothing swings out over a path, a flat roof or a busy pavement, and the outer face of the glass comes to you when you need to clean it. For upstairs rooms, dormers and flats where a ladder is awkward or impossible, that alone often decides it.

Rooms where they make the most sense

We tend to recommend tilt and turn where access or safety is the main concern. Bedrooms where you want the window open overnight without leaving a wide gap. Loft conversions and dormers that face a steep drop. Windows that open onto a walkway or balcony, where an outward sash would be in the way. Tall openings where a very large side hung casement would be heavy on its hinges.

They are less suited to spaces where the sash swinging inward would hit a deep sill full of plants, a kitchen tap or a blind that sits close to the glass. We check that at the survey so you do not find out after fitting.

  • Upper floors that are hard to clean from outside
  • Flats and blocks where outward opening is not practical
  • Bedrooms and nurseries needing secure night ventilation
  • Large openings where one inward sash replaces awkward multiple openers

Specification

Our tilt and turn windows are built to the same standard as the rest of our range. The frame is internally beaded, the sash locks at multiple points around its edge, and glazing is A-rated double as standard with triple glazing available for anyone after extra warmth or quiet. Frames come in white, anthracite, black, cream and woodgrain, in uPVC or aluminium.

Because the sash opens inward, the internal reveal and sill matter more than usual. We look at blinds, curtain poles and radiators under the window, and plan the opening direction so the sash clears them.

Survey, quote and fitting

Every job starts with a free survey. We measure each opening, check the reveals, sills and lintels, and talk through which way each sash should turn. You get a fixed written quote afterwards, with no pressure and no follow-up sales calls.

Our own installers carry out the fitting, never subcontractors. Old frames are removed and taken away, the new windows are fixed and sealed, and the handle positions are set and demonstrated before we leave. Every installation carries our 10 year insurance-backed guarantee, and we are CERTASS accredited.

Mixing styles on one house

You do not have to choose one style for the whole property. A common arrangement is casements on the ground floor, where cleaning is easy, and tilt and turn upstairs where it is not. Finishes and sightlines can be matched so the front of the house still reads as one set of windows. Our tilt and turn windows explained guide covers the pros and cons in more depth.

Questions

Common Questions

Can I clean the outside of the glass from indoors?

Yes. In the turn position the whole sash swings inward, so the outer face of the glass can be reached from inside the room.

Is the tilt position secure?

The tilt position opens only at the top and only by a few inches, so it gives ventilation without a gap that is easy to reach from outside. The sash locks at multiple points when closed.

Can tilt and turn windows be used as a fire escape?

In the turn position they give a wide clear opening. We check escape requirements for each room at the survey.

Are they only available in uPVC?

No. We offer them in uPVC and aluminium, in white, anthracite, black, cream and woodgrain finishes.

Do you fit them outside the Wirral?

We cover the whole Wirral, Chester and everywhere within roughly 30 miles.
